My favorite time to work out is on a crisp Autumn Saturday morning. I can sleep a little late, have a light breakfast and some coffee, put on my workout clothes, drive to the gym with windows down and no traffic, finish my workout and still have the entire day to enjoy being off from work. I’m not looking out my window to six inches of New England snow and deciding that I’d much rather stay in my warm bed, and I’m not already sweating about the thought of leaving my air conditioned house to go outside in the 100 degree weather just to sweat some more. Thus, September-November = prime fitness months.
So with that being said, I always love my body the most in the Fall. Of course as a woman, I try to love my body every day but you know as well as I do, that’s not always easy. The frigid, cold months can be super hard to find motivation to exercise, and with the holidays and delicious treats and drinks, it can be easy to pack on a few extra pounds. By spring time, you may start to get nervous about beach days that will soon be creeping up on you, but the extra weight from the winter might be holding you back from working out. Next thing you know, it’s July, and you’re cringing over the thought of wearing a pair of shorts, let alone a bathing suit! And as I mentioned before, it can be super difficult to find the motivation to work out when you’re feeling sluggish and sweaty anyway. Finally October arrives, you are enjoying the crisp clean air, and your mood is probably lighter. This is why hitting the gym or going for cool morning/evening walks seems so much more doable during this time.
So how do people stay fit year round? I think it has to do with committing to yourself and committing to a schedule. Maybe try to find a class at the gym that you look forward to participating in. Yoga, Zumba, and other dance classes can be a great way to get your body moving, and you will probably become addicted to the way you feel afterwards. You may not mind traveling in the heat/snow to get to your favorite barre class! In the alternative, if you can’t afford a class or don’t feel like leaving the comfort of your home, try some YouTube videos or pop in an old school DVD!
Let’s all work together as women to make this our best year, no matter what month we are in!
