Words from Women

For most of my adult life, I have worked with women in Direct Sales. I have hopefully inspired many with my very own Words of Wisdom. I also really enjoy researching accomplished and powerful women who have quotes that have had impact on all women.

I’d like to share some of my favorites with you.

Eleanor Roosevelt --“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.”

Fun Fact: Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a daily column from 1936 to 1962, which is very similar to a current “daily blog”. Look for her books on Amazon --GREAT!

But like most successful woman, Eleanor had her share of controversy. She had a very close friend --Lorena Alice Hickok. After being assigned to cover Roosevelt during her husband's first presidential campaign, Ms. Hickok struck up a close relationship with the soon-to-be First Lady. For several years, the two corresponded almost every day, traveled together, and professed emotional and physical affection for one another. The exact nature of this relationship has been widely discussed by historians; some have argued that the relationship was clearly romantic or erotic, while others have argued that Roosevelt’s exuberant letters has misled historians. Who knows? Who cares?

Susan B. Anthony -- An American social reformer and women's rights activist who played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage movement As a advocate for women, she said, “Failure is impossible.”

Fun Fact: As a teacher, she earned $2.50 a week. Men earned $10.00 a week.

Susan was arrested for voting in 1872. She was fined $100 and never paid it! (That’s equivalent to over $2,000 today!

Maya Angelou- -was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

There are really no short “Fun Facts” about this amazing woman. I strongly suggest you read, “I know why the Caged Bird sings”. You’ll find her life to be both incredibly sad & painful --and yet she persevered and became a legend. It will teach everyone the true meaning of resilience.

Amelia Earhart --was an American aviation pioneer and author.

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward”.

Fun Fact: (Well not so fun) We all know the mystery of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance after she left Hawaii on July 2nd. Ms. Earhart had so many accomplishments and “firsts” She was the first women and second person after Charles Lindbergh to fly solo across the Atlantic. She was the first woman to fly solo --nonstop flight across the US. Congress awarded her the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight. She was the first woman to receive that award. BTW, my father Charles Canto also received that award for “flying over the hump” in World War Two. For my Boston friends, Ms. Earhart lived in Medford Ma for some time and flew out of Quincy. (I never knew that)!

Let’s move to some fun woman: (I’m sure you know them)

The late great Joan Rivers --““I don’t exercise. If God had wanted me to bend over, he would have put diamonds on the floor.” I succeed by saying what everyone else is thinking.” “ Looking fifty is great—if you’re sixty.”

Lady Gaga -- who uttered the immortal words "I'm just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time." Now I can relate to that!

I could go on and on, sharing my favorite quotes. But instead I invite you to think about those women who have impacted your life. I’d love to hear from you!

And remember whatever you chose to do in life, wherever you choose to go, may you go forward with the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt, the determination of Susan B, Anthony, the spirit of Amelia Earhart, the courage of Maya Angelou, the humor of Joan Rivers and of course, the flair of Lady Gaga.”

From me: Life is a journey. Celebrate each day with purpose & passion and always remember to HAVE FUN!
